The Origins of Linkstash.net

Linkstash.net was born out of frustrations I had with in-browser bookmark managers. They work just fine, but they're modeled after your computer's filesystem. A collection of links, optionally organized into folders. It's a very familiar method of viewing your bookmarks, but I wondered if there was a better way.

Observe and Report

I started observing how bookmarks were managed in the various browsers and applications, identifying the parts that I liked and noting the features and functions that I didn't really care for. Along the way, I envisioned adding social media aspects to the collection and curation of links — incorporating features like sharing your curated lists, and plundering the public collections of others.

Shifting Paradigms

My focus was then turned to treating bookmarks less as files and more as commodities that you might search, rate, review, and collect from a site such as Amazon or Walmart. And I saw in my head an application that could help pair bookmarks to users, based on how relevant those links are to users with similar interests.

Plan of Attack

It's a massive undertaking for a single developer, but I have many programming buddies in my circles that are more than willing to shoot down my bad ideas and critique the ones that have potential so that I might better hone their design. Using their feedback, I'm starting my journey down this daunting path, taking it one step at a time. I'm excited to see where this all leads.
